Tactical / Precision Rifle Match
June 28, 2008

A Place to Shoot in Saugus, CA will be having its monthly Tactical / Precision Rifle Match on Saturday, June 28, 2008. Registration will begin at 0700 and the first stage will begin at 0730. The match should run until approximately 1200.

Since many of you will be participating in the SCPRC, which is right around the corner, this months match will be a little more precision shooting oriented with dot drills at 100, 200 and 300 yards. But don’t despair we’ll have some fun stages too. ;)

The fee for the match will be $25.00 for early registration, $30.00 for match day walk-ons. Plaques and certificates will for awarded to the top three finishers. This is limited to 20 competitors so pre-registration is suggested. If you’re interested in registering or have any questions either PM me through this forum or email me directly at billerwin@msn.com.

I can't get you at 1200 but since your 7 is holding so tight what say I put the 8" plate up there just for your 850 yard shot.

Let me see how it shoots tommarrow. Barrel might be going south. I dont have an extra as a back up yet eather. George is still taking care of it. I was thinking today I should of ordered 4 or 5 barrels in 7mm all 1-8.7tw.

you haven't had that rifle long enough for it to go south and if it is this quick why use such a caliber in a tactical weapon unless your family owns a barrel company. Hell that rifle will spend more time in the shop getting new barrel than it does shooting. One match and its toast.

It gots over 600 now.... Ive put 200 now. It had 400 I was told.....
It will be fine for along time. I just cant shoot the 180s out of it anymore. Im gona find a load for the 175gr SMKS and let them jump till that thing doesnt hold a inch anymore.

Uh huh.... Need we play with 223AI shooting 80gr VLDS?

Im loving this as a spin of Franks new rifle off the hide.

Rem S/A
CDI metal for rems (I will have the a set to test)
Manners GAT 90% carbon
Same barrel as Franks, Just 20"
Seekens rings and bases
NF 3.5-15x 50mm MLR, Mil knobs

OR

GAP Ar-10
USO 3.2-17x 44mm Canadian.

Have one really nice 308.

Speaking of 223ai's, I think thats going to be the next one for me. 24" 5 contour barrel on a remmy with seekins bottom metal and a manners gat. Run 80gr VLDs or 75 or 80 'maxs. That'll outrun 168's and most 175s in a 308 and only burn half the powder.

I've been seriously contemplating a VTR in plain ol' 223 when my stimulus check gets here. Its got a 1:9 which means I can run 69 or 77 SMKs out of it and pretty much the same barrel life especially with the 69s.

Hell I rarely shoot much past 600 - 800 anyway.

I've been playing with my savage 12fv in 223 recently. The 75 amaxes (bc=.435) stabilize fine out of the 26" 1 in 9 barrel. A friend of mine has the same rifle and has been pushing the 80gr amaxes (bc=.453) to about 2775. And they stabilize fine. That'll run right with the 168s and on the heels of the 175s in a 308.

If I can get a remmy sps varmint for a good price and put the seekins DBM on it (has mags long enough to mag feed 75 and 80 amaxes), I don't think I'd be shooting my 308 too much anymore.

If you're going to try and get one on line you'd better do it before 070108 (the new law change) as alot of out of staters have already posted that they won't sell to us Kalifornians after that.

I had thought about a SPS but I want something light to carry at matches (like I ever get to go) and after handling and shooting a few VTRs at the range I rather like them. Besides I think the triangle barrel has a cool factor to it.

rksimple
06-18-2008, 5:32 PM
The sps varmint is a heavy barrel. The vtr should be a bit lighter. It definitly has the cool factor. Should handle the 75 'maxs no prob. What are they going for?

Cypriss32
06-18-2008, 6:10 PM
Ryan the SPS-V has a 1-12tw, the SPS-Tactical 20" (basically same price +50?) Has the 1-9. If it doesnt stabalize the heavys send it to IT&D they will punch it to AI for 150.00 + shipping and all the work. It will stabalize those with the added velocity.

The savage I had in 223 would shoot the 75 Amaxs and the 77smks to 600 yards with ease (1-9). I miss that rifle.

Why is everyone hating on 308s these days?

Cypriss32
06-18-2008, 6:16 PM
It costs as much to run a 308 as my 7wsm now. Bullets are cheaper (175gr SMKS in 7mm VS 30cal bullets)
powber is less shooting a 308 but, bullet price makes up for it. Primers are the same.

Not hating really, just seeing it for what it is. Its still my go to caliber for killing stuff...right now anyway. And its still the mvp it seems when it comes to barrel life vs performance. For local matches that rarely exceed 600 yards or so, the 223 with 75 amaxes will hang with the 308 and be a lot cheaper to feed. When it comes down to dropping a deer, bear or whatever at that distance, the 308 is easily the choice. It seems everyone is going away from the 308 because in all the big matches, we all get killed by the little 6s and 6.5s. Oh well. I won't be changing from the 308 for a while at this point.

10 round mags for cheap!

The mini 14 mags don't allow a long OAL either. Don't the seekins mags allow an oal of 2.5 or something?

AICS my friend. Check out 6mmbr they did one. I also spoke to randy about this he said if I remember correctly (been forgetting stuff latly due to my knowing to much) It will feed good out of the mags. The 108gr Bts from berger are GTG as BC is high love to jump and can be shot at a modest velocity leading to decent barrel life in return. Win/Win situation if you ask me..... But then again barrel life is a killer for me.

I have to go back to Brazil next week and will be flying home on saturday.
Just wonderful.

I was offered free passage to a 200 acre horse farm with a shooting range on it where I can setup shop if I will move back to Kentucky to live there.
Maybe it's time to move...

My opinion of the .223 Ackley, I have one that GAP built for me.It has one of BOLO's Mini 14 conversion kits on it,I'm running 77 gr. Nosler's at 2900 fps loaded to magazine length. At the last APS match, I was one of two shooters that hit the 850 yard buff (second shot). Too bad I missed everything else!
77 grain Noslers are a lot cheaper than 80 grain VLD's. Also 20 rounds in the rifle is better than 5 when the squirrels are attacking!

Any reason to run the nosler/sierra 77's over a hornady 75 a-max?

Nosler 77 is rated at 0.340 bc while Hornady 75 a-max is rated 0.435
In 24" barrels, that's 10 MOA flatter at 1K.

CamW
06-18-2008, 11:23 PM
You can't load the 75 gr. A Max to magazine length, according to Hornady. The 77 Noslers are cheaper than Sierras and the A-max,more bullets, more practice.

Things that make you go hmmm...
22 PPC has a case length of 1.51" and 3 more gr of powder capacity when compared to 223 ackley with the same bullet at the same OAL.

If you want to shoot mag lengh you can use HS DBM or Seekens metal, both can handle VLDS and AMAX in them. If you want killing and dont mind moding reciever, and shooting lighter bullets. Bolos kit is king. Cheap mags too.

CamW
06-19-2008, 7:28 AM
The PPC cases are a good idea, no reason they shouldn't feed out of a Mini 30 mag.But if your trying to keep things cheap,223 brass is a lot cheaper than PPC brass, and you won't care if you lose a piece of 223 brass in the weeds.Try that with your precious PPC brass.

The HS kit in 223 is unobtanium, and they have no plans to make a 10 round mag.
The Seekins looks like a great kit, hopefully he'll have 10 round mags available.
