View Full Version : Cheap mini-14 that ended up being not so cheap

I purchased another mini-14 from a member on here for no specific reason other than it was a good price. I really didn't need another one but couldn't pass it up. He said it had been taken hunting once and was a little dirty but overall good condition. When we did the transfer I found a few small rust spots and it was dirty but nothing too bad. I came with a sketchy muzzle brake so I wanted to swap it out with something less sketchy and less ugly. When I was finally able to remove the brake I was surprised to see some pretty significant damage to end the of the barrel. I don't know of the person I got it from knew about it or not, I don't know if he was first owner. Whoever messed with it didn't do it any favors.

So I started trying to figure out what could be done. I really hadn't planned on putting a lot into this but figured I was half committed so no time to turn back. I swapped out the stock, had ar15barrels cut down the barrel and permanently attach the brake, and purchased a sight to sit on top of the gas block.

It ended up being more expensive that I had thought but I do like the way it came out. A huge thank you to ar15barrels, ridiculously knowledgeable and did amazing work.

Here is the finished product, what do you think?

(please excuse the crappy pictures)

looks good, looks different. i wouldn't mind getting a newer mini. had one, got rid of it and now i kinda miss it. i do like the look the A Team mini with the folding stock, but those stocks are $500-$600 alone

To each is own. I didn't want to spend a ton on a rifle I was already spending significantly more then I had planned to. It serves a purpose and although it may be hard to believe is waaaaaaay better looking than the previous one.

I'll have to take a look and see if I can find them still. I tried to destroy all evidence of the abomination ;)

Is it just me or does the barrel look bent to the left on the last pic?

I have the same sighted gas block on my Mini, very good fellow to do business with. I had a Revolution made laminated stock for my rifle, but the forend channel wasn't quite deep enough and the front of the op rod was sliding on the metal liner. Went with an older Ruger factory walnut stock and a factory walnut handguard instead.

The best looking brake is no brake at all. A .223 doesn't need a muzzle brake. Plus, this setup results n a shorter sight radius.

Agreed, sadly to get rid of the damage and maintain the minimum length necessary I had to do it this way. It won't be used for anything long range so I'm ok with it

That's a good looking gun.

The mini 14 is a lot of fun to shoot and it's got that classy look.

That's a fine looking Mini14. I'm far from being a fan of those rifles, but I really like the finished product. Cool looking stock.

Barrel looks like a good job. How does it shoot? Thats the most important part. brake looks ok, wth its your gun, so long as you're happy with it, thats all that matters. Looks like you went thru a heckuva trouble into making it functional, so I can see why you want to limit costs on the brake.
Nice rifle!
What kind of groups you getting? You got me thinking I need a mini14 for my collection.

Thanks all. Haven't taken it out yet but will report back once I do. The brake was cheap and easy and most importantly CA legal. Ar15barrels said he can break it off later and since it's threaded I can add something different later if I like. Just had to keep the minimum length.

Thinking of cutting the barrel down on my mini as well I like the looks! Where'd you get that front sight and how does it sit on the gas block?

I got the front sight from here:

http://www.thearmsroom.com/id9.html

It screws on the same way the top of the gas block originally did. He said he usually has the white stripe version in stock, the others he has to order so it takes longer to get.

I filed for a divorce from my mini years ago. However, that does look well thought out.

So my buddy just gave me his Mini to fix for him. Sounds like your stories are similar. So his has had a flash hider amateur installed. Has had the front sight off many times. He also tried to put a cheap bull pup stock thing on it once so its been taken apart many times. The end of the barrel is haggard. Do you mind me asking how much the barrel work was? After seeing this post I think my best bet is to do the same mods as you have done to make it shoot straight again.

This is where I went to have the work done and couldn't recommend him more. It has all the prices listed but if I remember correctly it was between 120-150 otd

Sounds good to me. I live out 120 miles away from the shop. Ill just have to be honest with my buddy and tell him I can make it as good as his wallet wants it to be.

If he doesn't have a budget cap ill send the barrel off and have it shortened and put the break on it. Then get a strut, the gas block front sight and a new rear sight.

But if it was mine I would probably just do the gas block front and just be happy with it.

Nice looking brake, looks appropriate to the rifle.
Never been a laminated man however. Enjoy!

It's nice!

Is there any reason this would be specific to a mini 14, or would this apply in general to most long guns?
