I only own one centerfire semi-auto rifle and it's one of my all time favorite guns. It's a 1949 vintage Remington 81 in .300 Savage. It kicks harder than a Savage 99 in that caliber because that entire barrel slams back in recoil then reengages. This is a fun gun to shoot with all that clanging going on when you pull the trigger. You can break it down in seconds using a dime for a screwdriver.

This video has some slow motion footage of the long action recoil mechanism of the model 8(almost the same gun) in action that those unfamiliar with it might be interested in.

Nice! Love the old iron. If you run out of ammo, you can beat your opponent to death!

XsQXksP-YhI I actually like the streamlined straight gripped Model 8 like in the video better than the 81. My wife bought me a model 8 for Christmas once but it had a .30 barrel assembly and a .35 receiver. Seems somone mixed up two guns at some point. So, back to the pawn shop it went.

The Model 8/81 rifles always fascinated me - John Moses Browning had some really unique and fun rifle designes. I loved my Model 81 but the .300 Savage is a tough round to find in northern MN where I live.

Thxs OP for the post. Model 8/35rem sitting in the back of the safe. It was the wife's fathers. I think it was his hunting gun.

Some things get meaner as they get older.

Keep your shoulder doctor on retainer if you shoot the 81 frequently.

Most of them do about 1 1/2" to 3" groups at 100yds.
