View Full Version : What would you build with an extra 80% AR15 lower? Besides 5.56/223

Have one more that I'm debating on what to build. Another pistol? Carbine? 300BLK? Already have a few 5.56 AR's, thinking about a 300blk or 458 socom. What would you do?

9mm Carbine
5.7x28mm Carbine
6.5 Grendel DMR/hunting rifle
.416 Barrett bolt action rifle
.50 Beowulf engine block destroyer
Featureless version of any of the above

300blk. They're well on their way to the next "big" round

I see them as dieing out...

I plan on finishing one of my pistols in 300, but the hype has definitely faded off.

I have the same dilema, I was thinking 9mm carbine.

Do you need a 308 lower for 762x39?

6.5 grendel would be my vote.

7.62X39 build could be a fun upper, especially in a pistol format.

No. Just a standard ar lower

I would do 9mm.

I've made exact replicas of my DD MK18 and Sig M400 from 80% er's in 9mm and it just makes shooting so much cheaper. It is a fun round coming out of a rifle. It's way better than using a .22lr conversion or dedicated upper. Theres always a lot of used 9mm uppers in the marketplace

Well I think that the Ar-15 hype as a whole is quieting down. Everyone loaded up the last couple years and they're still putting everything together or paying off their overpriced setups. That said, I think 300Blk has a lot of potential. It's an easy foot in the door to wildcat calibers, it's successful for hunting and (in free states) can be nicely suppressed.

Very true.

I guess time will tell. I wouldn't mind seeing it stick around. I've grown fond of 300 my self.

I have 2 completed lowers that I don't know what do with..

How about a lightweight build? SPR? .22lr pistol? I actually think something like this would be fun to own (not mine).

Don't build a 6.5 Grendel. I don't want to compete with yet another for reloading supplies!

I'd go 7.62x39. I don't have time to reload. That .22 pistol build looks kinda cool though.

I have one set aside for a Grendel but I don't reload so it's a shelfed project for now.

In order to be CA legal...

It would need to be built from an "80% receiver" and built to comply with CA dangerous weapons & unsafe handgun laws.

Which means it will need a minimum 6" barrel length and a minimum 10.5" overall length and be a break-open single-shot pistol or bolt-action single-shot pistol.

My lowers were completed a longgg time ago and built up as pistols. I've since sold the uppers and still have the lowers sitting around. That's technically a legal AR pistol lower isn't it?

Same here, all except one of my 80s are pistol builds. The 1 is for my retro m16
That little 22 up there looks cool devil, where some info on that

So many possibilities... what kind of shooting do you like to do? A 9mm carbine would be a pretty sweet plinker, especially with handgun ammo getting back to "normal"

7.62x39. I'm building an upper now. 2300fps vs 1800 fps for 300 blackout. Cheaper ammo, including the brass versions. Easier to reload, no resizing .223 cases. No gouging on ammo prices.

Glad I completed all my spare 80s 2 years ago just about and all are pistols except one plinker rifle. Ive had a 22 pistol planned. As someone mentioned, the x39 in 7.5 inch was fun and an attention grabber. Sold that upper to a fellow calgunner

It's a fun problem to have isn't it?
I just solved this issue not too long ago.
I've been sitting on a spare completed 80% for over 4 years or so.
Finally built an A4 style rifle last month.

Lowers are so cheap these days it would not make sense to do anything but a pistol with an 80%.

I do not have a rampant interest in another AR; would kinda like another Desert Eagle first.

I would be tempted by a 50 Beo or 458 Socom though. Then maybe convert 223/556 from M4 to bull barrel big scope varmint rifle.

I already reload other calibers for 30+ years. Which would be nicer to reload; 50 Beo or 458...?

So many cool Suggestions.......You guys are NO help! LOL!! I didnt know I can do a 50 beowolf and I forgot about 9mm.....Man it just got deep. haha. 458, 300blk, 6.5 grendel.......Maybe 7.62 since I'm waiting for a WASR anyway......2 different platforms to play with and compare. Another pistol would be fun.

I mainly do plinking and shooting paper. I am considering long range later on down the road but i have a bolt action in mind for that. Hunting wild Boar is something I'd like to get into in the future so maybe one i can use for that?

Anyone need their car washed or grass cut? LOL.......I need a second job just to fund this hobby.

I know nothing about it really but that .338 spectre round looks pretty darn cool. Ive seen a few videos of it and its pretty interesting. Similar concept to 300 blk i guess.

I've been contemplating a 9mm build, but am worried about the feeding problems I've read about. Has anyone here had any experience with the PSA AR-9 (http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-9.html)?

I am also sitting here with my final 80% lower. Ive built 300blk (pistol and rifle), 50 Beo, 6.5 Grendel variant (6mm Fat Rat), a SPR in 6x45, an M4a1 clone, an M16a4 clone, and a 223 wylde pistol.

I have no ide what to do for this final lower. I like reloading so Im 100% down with wildcats (already have 2). 277 Wolverine is front runner right now but Ive caught wind of a 358MGP (9mm-223)? That sounds interesting. Plus these new bolts that Ive heard of open up new wildcats (7mm Valkyrie and 257 Bobcat for starts). Decisions.

I also have an AR10 lower just sitting here because I cant decide what to do with it.

300 Black if you can have a silencer otherwise something else. How about 223 target gun.
