Hi,

I'm taking a Long Range Rifle class this weekend and the flyer said I need to have 300 rounds of quality ammo. I'm using a Remington VSF in .308 but have no idea what is considered good quality ammo and what is not.

This isn't a match so I don't think I need match quality ammo. We are suppose to be shooting (I don't know at what - maybe steel?) out to 1,000 yards though.

So, any help in being pointed in the right direction would be appreciated. I was just going to use some stuff I bought from Miwall a year ago until I saw that they are requesting good quality ammo. I don't know what to buy or where to buy it, but I am probably going to have to get it shipped fast.

Thanks in advance.

-Chris

Long range rifle class - you take the time to get there and pay $ for the class, you might as well bring some good ammo to reduce your MOA at such long ranges. Personally, 300 rounds isn't terrible - probably some simple Federal Gold Medal Match with Sierra MatchKings in the weight you shoot.

You will need match ammo - get either Fed Gold Medal Match in 175 grn if you're going out to 1K or Black Hills in the same bullet weight.

ok. I will do the Fed Gold Medal Match. Any suggestions on a good cheap place to purchase them? I was thinking either Midway or CheaperThanDirt?

If you can find the Black Hills cheaper, buy those. You will find no difference in accuracy between the two, and the Black Hills uses winchester cases. They are far better for reloading or even selling off if you don't want to hang onto them. If you don't, I'll buy the once fired BHA (winchester) cases from you.

Curious but how much is a reasonable price for once fired BHA cases?

depends on what they were fired in - bolt gun w/match chamber about 18.00 per 100; bolt gun without match chamber about 15.00 ber 100; M1A about 12.00 per 100 - also depends on the amout you buy.

I gave about 80 away between AR-15Barrels, SDJim, and Jicko. Just curious how much it was worth :)

I do have about 220 more rounds that I'll gather once I fire them.

Probably since he started shooting from the back of moving trailers and losing his fancy Lapua brass :)

With the new rifle. I didn't want to lose all my lapua brass in matches, so instead of having 2 different loads, I just switched everything to winchester. I suck just enough to not notice much of a difference.:D The number of loads I get out of each case, however, is pretty different. The winny brass I got now has 4 firings on it and is starting to die. I think 1 more time and they're done. I can easily get double with lapua.

I get around five reloads before accuracy drops due to neck tension out of Winny - still better than paying 60.00 a 100 for Lapua.

I have had GREAT luck with HSM ammo I have found it cheaper than both black hills and federal match. Just something to look at I guess.

Expect to pay $30/box.

Match .308 ammo in 168 BTHP loading is fine to 600y. Past that, 175 BTHP loads are much superior.

I so beat you to it...
I shot next to him last weekend and he traded it to me for some cardboard and masking tape.

Don't forget Hornady. My 700s love it, no difference in group size between FGM and Hornady BTHP match out to 600 yds (never shot out to 1000 :(), and its cheaper-

The TAP FPD stuff is great too with the badass black cases, more expensive though.

Black Hills 168 grain BTHP Match is my favorite. My .308 also does really well with Winchester 168 BTHP Match but the Winny ammos is much more expensive.

I am doing the 168s Black Hills for 2.08 less/box of 20 FTF than able's.
