I just picked up a repro black powder pistol and would like to play with it, but am having a heck of a time trying to find a local Sacramento dealer that stocks black powder. I've visited Just Guns, and Discount in Roseville and although JG has BP on their website, they carry nothing related in the store. Discount seemed to have rifle supplies only. The problem is I only wanted to pick up a pound and avoid the $28.00 Hazmat shipping surcharge. $28 bucks plus shipping for a pound of Pyrodex or FFFg just doesn't get it. So where do all of these BP clubs get their powder?? Group buys?? or someplace in town that I'm not aware of. Thanks for any help....

Check with Sportsman's Warehouse in Rocklin or in Rancho Cordova, they both had Pyrodex in stock and on the shelf last time I was in there about a week ago.

I'll check with them... after I check out the Warehouse first. It's a heck of a drive.

I'll try the Rancho store first. Thanks for the lead...
Just need to pick up something, and Pyrodex will work.
Thanks

If they are to have GOEX or Swiss, that would be a miracle.
I totally forgot about Rusty's. I just know by experience that B-Bar-Y has just about everything for the Black Powder shooter. Weather its flintlock or percussion, 10 to 1 they have more for what you would be looking for.

Well I went to the Rancho Sportsmen's Warehouse and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. They had everything I needed and then some. About 16' of shelves and pegboard with BP stock. They had more of a selection then any of the online dealers thought about having. Many Thanks for the suggestion. I was getting real frustrated.... Picked up the Pyro, patches, and .451 ball.
Now I have another problem that maybe someone here has a cure. This pistol came with a tin of #10 CCI percussions. The pistol functions great....until I put caps on the nipples. Then it cocks and the hammer will drop once. The second time it half cocks and the indexing block doesn't drop and causes it to jam up and not cycle. Remove the caps and she runs as smooth as a baby's butt. I thought it might have been a problem with the timing except it works fine without the caps. A conundrum....?? Any suggestions??

Was it Pyrodex (the not real GP) and or did they have the real McCoy GOEX too?

That's where I go. Runs roughly $23.50 out the door for a pound of Goex. I'm in the area occasionally thankfully.
That being said if you're in a rush pretty much any place that has reloading supplies has Pyrodex or 777 or SOMETHING. Sometimes it's in a little muzzleloader ghetto one aisle over from where the smokeless powder would be if they had any.

Another place to check is in Auburn, Sierra Gun Supply. No website (530) 823-9113

It's Pyro P. FFFG equivalent. Didn't pay too much attention to what else they had... I'm still learning....

That's good to know from you guys. Jamestown is a bit of a drive for me as well but, well worth the drive to stock up. Thanks!

If you want real BP, GOEX's retailer is in Ione.

If I remember correctly SW has ffg and fffg on the shelf. With the selection they have, it doesn't make sense to drive all the way down to Ione. Now if I were closer it would...but I'm not, and very thankful RC is just 4 miles away....

Hey man, if it is REAL black powder, more power to you. If I could drive 4 miles and buy Holy Black I wouldn't care (at first) if it were elephant, $30 a pound, whatever.
But I'm starting to suspect some folks in here are mistaking substitute propellents (American Pioneer, Pyrodex, BH209, 777, etc) for the real thing.
They are not the same thing. With the real thing being almost universally preferred.

For those still learning, Fake BP is a propellent (a "propellent") and is govorned by the same laws as white powder (smokeless). $28 hazmat, any shop can buy, carry, and sell it, etc. Treat as the same.
Real black powder is classified as an explosive and is govorned by a whole different set of laws. It's not easy to get, keep, and sell. CA says it's illegal to have more than a pound of it at a time (and illegal to have what, more than 20 pounds of smokeless at a time? something like that). Illegal to sell second hand. Technically. Etc.
For a business to get a lisence to sell it is not easy, and retailers are few and far between. For Bay Area folks, the two closest retailers are in Paso Robles to the south, and Ione to the north. I know because I called the GOEX distributor and specifically asked for hte closest retailers.
Your alternative is Powder Inc, since for now you can still buy explosives online and have them shipped to your door. For now. As with smokeless, you can spread the hazmat fees across a bulk buy.
-----------
FF and FFF (and F and 4F) are just grades. You will find GOEX vs Swiss vs pyro, 777, and APP will all be physically different in the same specified grade. But that's what it is. Fine, superfine, etc.
Where specifically in Ione? Jamestown is actually a little closer to me, but who knows, maybe I'll be passing by someday. I assume it's these guys http://www.rendezvousprimitivearms.com ? Not open on the weekends, ouch.

call and ask. Not sure. Once the distributor said Ione and Paso, I told him Paso was on the way form SJ to the university I graduated fomr and love to visit whenever possible, paso is relatively convenient if 2 hours by car, let's focus on that one.
I don't go to railroad flat yet, or whatever rendezvouz is up outside Ione.
Call Murphypowder yourself though and ask. Friendly folks as you would expect in this industry.

I went back over to pick up a few things from Sportsman's Warehouse a couple of days ago. For anyone in the Sacramento area it's the place to shop. It looked like all their powders were subs, but that's good enough for me. I also picked up another BP Colt Dragoon 44 in an auction. Unfired in the box. Had a heck of a time getting the wedge out and the bbl assembly off. It's a lot better since lubed. Been sitting in the box for almost 50 years..... Heavy sucker!!....

Personally it's better than driving 40 miles to find a small.

You sound defensive. Please understand I am not being judgemental. Communication of fact, nothing more. How you conduct your shooting and purchase of consumables is of no business of mine.

I would agree with Whiterabbit that BIG BOX stores will only sell a propellant, not Black Powder such as Goex or Swiss.
If one ever is at a rendezvous and is caught filling there powder horn with some after market propellent, they will likely be looked at in an intimidating way or might be nice and highly suggest to use the real McCoy. In fact some folks will even offer to share there powder to a green horn. Live and learn as they say. But, its the other guys money that is spent and here for free is good advice.
IMHO, driving 40 miles is no big deal these days. If one can afford to play rifleman they can afford the drive.

Now that I have to disagree with. Maybe the inter-club matches, I don;t know about those. But a couple guys here shoot with the subs. More power to them. But if they are cutting corners there, they are also the folks shooting with trade rifles and such, and aren't competitive.
I still don't care. God Bless them for being there on the line. They've been shooting for years or decades longer than me. They are allowed to use whatever they want. I hold no grudges. But I also fuly understand the rammifications of the choice, sub vs real thing, and the downrange results of such. So do they. They don;t need anyone telling them what to or not to use.
We do sometimes shoot targets backwards to help out the trade rifle guys. :)

Bridge sportsmans, right there on Spring street. Not only a goex dealer, but fine people as well. Great shop. We're starting to get into the habit of stopping in town for a nice meal (who knew paso had some nice wife-friendly lunch spots), then drop in before heading on our way.
Much better than the old university student plan of stopping in king city for mcdonalds.
