You don't register, you just transfer thru an FFL holder. Only pistols get registered.

Do you mean your friend bought the shotgun from another friend without doing the transfer at a federal firearms licensed (FFL) holder/vendor?

Wouldn't this depend on the age of the shotgun?

The first question in this transaction is how old is the shotgun? If it is over 50 years old, no paperwork is requied to have been filed. Secondly, if the long gun was less that 50 years old, you were REQUIRED to do a transfer with an 01 FFL. Failing to do so is illegal.

In the shotgun forums, sportsman ask a question about this Mossberg, but also mentioned it is a bullpup style Mossberg. I don't think Mossberg made the bullpup style shotgun 50+ years ago.

Im still kind of confused on this part. If it doesnt get registered, then why do it? Do they put the gun in your name?

They run the buyer through the system to insure they are eligible to own a gun. Beyond that.....it's the law.

You do it because it is the "LAW." In addition, transfering the weapon through a FFL holder allows for a background check before the weapon is released to the new owner.

Oh yea thats right. So right after i buy a long arm, there is no way for FFL, police, etc to know that i own it?
(sorry to jack the thread)

The new owner's name will appear in the FFLs ledger book they are required to keep. It's just the firearm is not formally registered into the CA DOJ data base.

Since there are NO weapon details transmitted to the DOJ at time of registration....NO they have no way of knowing what you own. It could be anything from a 10/22 to a Barret .416.

Techincally, only AWs & 50BMGs need to be "registered" in Ca. When handguns are transfered through a FFL, the sale is tracked but it is not called "registration."

What is the law for "borrowing" rifles from parents? Would a person get into any trouble for possession of their parents' rifles?
