I took a 10/22 DSP (Deluxe Sporter) off the shelve at my nearest LGS. Total impulse buy...

DSP: Checkered walnut stock, sling swivel/loops, no barrel band.
http://www.ruger-firearms.com/Firearms/images/Products/17L.jpg

I wanted a 10/22 for years, but just never got around to it... too busy spending money on "serious" firearms. I have enough of the black, pseudo-military rifles; real deal, brown military rifles from yesteryears; and semi-auto handguns currently in use with abc/xyz LE/military groups.

Now, I want guns that are just plain fun, guns that I don't have to pretend to rely on for my life. No more of this CQB, door-kicker, entry, HD, MOUT, Combat, Warrior, high speed, low drag, SOCOM, SHTF, TEOTWAWKI, Gecko45 bollocks.

I missed the days just a few years back when 10/22's regularly sold for $139 at Big5. Now, they go for $219 on sale.

And no. I don't plan on getting a heavy barrel, huge a** scope, bipod, and a synthetic stock to make this a pseudo-sniper/precision rifle. Nor will I Tapco-f#@! this rifle with a plastic collapsible stock, picatinny rails, a forward grip, and a single point sling. All I'm getting is a simple carry sling, 4x Nikon Prostaff, and a few bricks of ammo at Walmart.

Next stop... stainless steel revolvers!!!:D

With the 10/22s the temptation to change parts is so great with all the good aftermarket upgrade parts available that I recommend getting 2. Keep this one stock as your plinker, classic rifle. Then get another and modify it.

22 lr rifles are huge fun. Couple of weeks ago me and my dad went to a local rifle range and all we had were 22's. We had 2 10/22's and a few other 22's. 1 with a 4x scope and one with just irons. At fifty yards with the scoped 10/22 I could burn through the 10 round mags and keep all shots on my shoot-n-see target. Both 10/22's were the plain jane variety and shot suprising well.

I bought a 10/22 awhile ago and it's really fun to play with. I had a bunch of fun with mine over the last couple range sessions. The public range is a blast to take it to. I too bought the plain jane one and haven't modified it yet. I think I will add the auto release thingy for the bolt and maybe jewel the bolt and that's it. I feel like I'm a little kid again shooting it.

Nice rifle!

I've been wanting one of those for years!!!

I have a bolt action .22 - but there's something really cool about just loading up a mag of .22 and letting it rip! And there's no sticker shock when you do a mag dump!

It costs me about 6 bucks to do a mag bump on my AK right now. . .

I also bought mine (10-22) from a friend for $100.00.

I installed a HB, a nice Ruger stock and then purchased the Volquartsen .22 Short bolt and magazine, reworked the action so I can shoot .22 CB Longs (I reworked a few magazines to work with the CB Longs). The rifle functions perfectly in semi-auto.

The rifle is "very" quiet, almost like it's surpressed.

Heres a 10/22 we put together with a Nordic Component kit a few weeks ago, a lot of fun to shoot and it mimics a gun setup for competition. So, can practice at a lot cheaper ammo cost.

Plastic trigger housing trigger and barrel band and there already out...once 2007 model's are gone it will be plastic fantastic but these are parts that anyone modding would remove or replace anyways...i'll replace the barrel and stock on mine but keep the trigger and housing for now.

There has been a lot of debate about Ruger switching to some plastic parts on the 10/22. I've visited some the rimfire forums and a lot of long time Ruger fans are not pleased. That's why I'm looking to pick up one more.

The 10/22 is my favorite rifle. My first rimfire, and, if the state of CA ever says we can only own one rifle, a 10/22 it will be. Accurate, handy - I have a "Euro" mannlicher stocked Ruger sporter, a youth for my daughter, and a Bell & Carlson stocked beauty. About three or four years ago I did an article which ended up (for some reason) in DEER HUNTING ANNUAL about making custom 10/22s from parts I got off Ebay. I made four rifles with stocks and MATCH barrels from Volquartsen, Bell and Carlson, Green Mountain, etc., to follow up an article I had done years before that in GUNS magazine, but back then only custom gunsmiths like Clark were converting 10/22s for the Chevy Team Challenge, etc. One of the greatest things about the 10/22 is the way the barrel and stock are so easily replaced even by ham handed amateurs (take note that the "silver" 10/22 receivers are TIGHTER fits for barrels than the blued.

Here are the four rifles which are all built on Ruger receivers with Leupold 4-12 scopes --

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p54/Fasanoland/10-22s.jpg

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p54/Fasanoland/10-22s-wide.jpg

You can see the differnt approaches to muzzle crowns --

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p54/Fasanoland/10-22-muzzles.jpg

It was during this test that CCI Stingers' imcompatibility with match chambers was confirmed.

Bell & Carlson Odyssey, Fajen, Volquartsen 2500 and a green "Shark" stock that was really quite comfortable that I think comes from serbia -- everyone sells this stock --

http://i125.photobucket.com/albums/p54/Fasanoland/10-22-butts.jpg

-- after the test they went to my friends as Christmas gifts, except the Red Volquartsen, the MOST accurate shooting into 1/8 of an inch at 50 yards which went to Gunbroker when I needed the jack, and the Black B&C Odyssey, which stayed with me.

AHHH! I CANNOT afford another cool toy! I'll keep my mosins thankyouverymuch! Although the best I can do is about 1.0 MOA. Everytime I pull up next to a 10-22 though those things are very, very fun looking.

Although the target guys hate when when old "Olga" starts yelling (M44).

It all started because I saw a factory Ruger with that Fajen stock -- they did a limited run back in teh 1990s and then Bill Riuuger stopped the, I wanted that stock. Found out Fajen made it. Then I went to Rettings and bought the four rattiest used Ruger 10 22's -- that the receivers were in the best shape -- that lump of aluminum is the only part I was gonna keep -- then hit the web for the best deals on parts -- a Hornet action rebuild on your trigger group, a green mountain barrel, simple stock (you can get the wood ones inletted but unfinished even) you can put together a match 10/22 (without scope) for like $300 tops that will shoot with an Anschutz. Match Burris or Even Weaver and you're there.

I still have it. A Walnut stock, pre warning with a steel butt plate. We would walk along dirt roads and plink, pot shot at ground squirrels and if we were lucky, get a cotton tail or jack. Just a bunch of young teen boys with guns and dogs. No one ever called the cops on us either. Good memories.

Anyone with a stock 10/22- I HIGHLY recommend a "trigger kit". Go to "rimfirecentral.com" and pm "swampfox" for one. Only $45 which is about the best deal out there. Includes a volquartzen hammer (which reduces trigger pull to about 2 3/4lbs all by itself) bolt buffer, auto bolt release, and extended mag release. All 4 parts for $45- Cant beat it. I just recieved one from him last week and the difference is unbelievable. Deal in confidence, he's a regular there that does a LOT of business, and has a solid reputation.

The 10/22 is the rifle that makes me hate the hi-cap magazine ban the most vociferously (WRT the 10/22 the 25 rounders really are hi-cap... the standard magazine is 10-rotary).

I have one butler creek hot lips 25 rounder that i guard jealously. It is lots of fun to shoot with, and amazing what the lowly 22 will do to a potato at 15 yards (ka-splut-phew.... bit of tuber everywhere).

I would suggest to anyone the following, instead of buying a new 10/22 at Big 5:

1. buy two on gunbroker, used for about 150 each.
2. keep one stock and the other to tacticalize.

yes, that's a word now.
