I'm yearning to get a Saiga. I honestly can't wait.
Do any of you Saiga owners have some pics to post or your rifles? How about those of you with cool accesories, handguards, sights, etc? I'm very interested on the scope mount and how it works. Hell i'm interested in the whole thing.
When I get mine I will be sure to add some pics, or get it started if this idea fizzles.

From everything I've read... they are to help prevent magazine wiggle, or wobble, or what ever you want to call it...

Dimpled Saiga receivers are rumored to have come off the .mil side of the factory rather than the civilian side of production. They help with mag wobble, which is only a (small)factor when using hi-caps, so it made sense to save money by skipping this for civi/low-cap designated rifles. They make for more authentic looking conversions.
I finally gave up on finding a dimpled .223 and ordered one sight unseen. Finally got it and no dimples :(
Mine is stock, except I removed the cover on the gas tube that was spot welded on.

One thing I noticed is the 762 dimpled has the "x" and "y" stamp just like the romanian sar's. My 223 dimpled doesn't have the "x" and "y" stamp. The old ones used pins to attach the front sight and gas block. The latest ones seem to have the mil spec spot welds.

http://dinzagarms.com/saiga_762x39/akbor1.html
+1 on the Dinzag parts. My lower handguard retainer always manages to creep forward while I'm shooting. It just lets the lower handguard wiggle a bit, but could have the possibility of coming all the way off. 500 rds of rapid fire shooting couldn't get it all the way off. My cleaning rod worked its way forward. Just a quick note, that cleaning rod gets awfully hot, so don't just grab it without gloves.
So, how can I put a brake on the end??

does any one know where i could get a saiga ak47 russian in california i need help i need a riffle and i cant find it anywhereWell, first of all its not called a Saiga AK47. Just a Saiga. Second of all, know what caliber you want so maybe someone can point you in the right direction incase they're selling what you want or someone has just what you want in stock. I got mine from Cold War Shooters in the middle of October, right before everything when haywire. There's lots of other places that have them as well, including the banner ads at the top of the page and some gun stores can order one if they want to. Just look around..

Got together today with a friend who is a great mechanic and fabricator. 4 hours later (I had to run off for an hour and do "family" stuff), my Saiga 223 was converted...just a couple of small tweaks needed.
Still need to:
Install the FCG retaining plate I ordered today (I'm re-using the spring right now and it's held in place by a drilled out pin),
Get out and shoot the gun to be sure it's functioning properly,
Paint the bottom of the receiver,
Install a Galil style front handguard,
Paint all plastic parts with Krylon Fusion and bake it on.
I won't rehash the basics of a conversion. However, here's what I found...
The spot weld must be made from German tank armor (someone else said that, I agree). It was a job to get it drilled!
I cut the BHO a hair too short. When it is pushed in to catch the bolt, it's darn near flush with the receiver.
Had to add a bushing to the folding stock mechanism to disable it or it would have been an "illegal" length. I'll change the brass collar to a plastic or polymer when I get ready to paint.
The maglock is pretty basic and not really that great (it does the job, though). If anyone has suggestions and links for a high quality maglock, please let me know!
Black nylon plugs from Ace Hardware look just like rivet heads! 25 cents each.
Overall, I'm thrilled that this is done. It was fun, a little challenging (everything good usually is) and turned out pretty decently. The improvement in trigger quality is worth the effort all by itself!
My buddy Rick deserves a huge thank you. His skill was invaluable!

That's odd that your dimpled doesn't have the X/Y, most of the ones I've seen in my researching have had them. My non-dimpled has the X/Y, as well as the pinned front sight/GB.
That's some nice Ruskie kit BTW. Will look good put together.
I typed the wrong letter.. I meant "I" and "Y".
It's been a while, I finally found a Russian rear trunnion with all the small parts so I can finally get the thing built!
There are lots of differences between the 2006 and 2008. Instead of S and F it has a "Russian" N and O. Some other differences are the 06 has a heavier barrel with pinned parts and the 08 has a standard weight barrel with press punched parts. Some markings are different and in different locations. The 06 looks like it was a 762x39 receiver then the marking was machined out. A triangle with a C in it was also machined out.
Here are some comparsion pics.

don't mean to hijack here, but how accurate is the Saiga .308 compared to the M1A?

Not quite finished yet, but it's CA legal.
Mag lock installed and folder mechanism is disabled to maintain legal minimum lenght.
Can't believe I worried about converting. It was a great project and the improvement in the trigger alone is worth the effort.

Galil foregrip with 10 round Saiga magazine
Galil foregrip with 10/35 Galil mag (no bullet guide yet, so I haven't tried firing it)
Love this conversion!.

Sherm2954 - Ditch the dust cover rail. Its not a stable platform for an optic. Go with either a beryl or side mounted rail.

I have a side mounted rail...just need to zero the red dot on it....i appreciate the input, as i'm a neophyte to the ak but always willing to listen!!!!!

What did you use for the hanguard retainer?
sherm2954
02-03-2010, 08:48 PM
the handguard is a tapco galil-style with a metal retainer that has a bolt that runs through the front and tightens it in place. There is a second screw at the rear base that goes where the original saiga screw goes. Here's another photo...btw...i got the foregrip off ebay used...i admit that i'm cheap, but why would i spend 80 bucks when i can spend 40 and still buy more ammo?http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac292/sherm2954/Saiga%20Paint%20and%20reassemble/039.jpg

Thanks for the answer. And, I totally agree. I'm all for shooting a rifle instead of accessorizing it.

Yes sir. That poor thing is just screaming out for a friggin muzzle brake though.

Not sure what you mean. It has a US made AK stock, a US made AK pistol grip, and a US made AK fire control group. The hammer has to be modified to work in the .308 Saiga however.

You answered my question. What modification was required for the hammer? Easy/simple?

If you put a pistol grip on a stock Saiga, you will be a felon....
Now you can turn your Saiga into a fixed mag rifle by installing a bullet button and then you can have a pistol grip. Personally, I'd rather have the ability to drop mags without messing around with all that BB stuff, so Im not a fan of putting pistol grips on Saigas..
Speaking of Saigas, I just put a different optic on mine..

You can "convert" your Saiga and still have a drop free mag without any maglock. All you need is to replace the pistol grip with one of these:

Check out my converted Calilegal 18'' Saiga .308. There's nothing wrong leaving in the sporting conf., but i chose to tacticool mine: (Tapco G2, pistol grip and stock/Solar Tactical maglock/10rd surefire mag/DPH rail/Texas Weapon System dogg rail with rear peepsight...ROCK SOLID!/FSC 30 muzzle brake...it's obnoxiously LOUD and really tame this beast/4-16X50 vortex optic). Thanks vin. This rail is very sturdy, no play at all with the scope I'm using (4-16X50). Just make sure you use the bigger screw that came with it. Also, the rear peepsight aligns very well with the frontsight with minor adjustment...nice grouping at 50yds. I got the TWS from JABTAC.
